VICTOR (Violence Intervention Collaborative Training Outreach & Research) is a program aimed to reduce community violence in the City of Newport News through the creation of a coordinated Crisis Response Network. VICTOR, enhanced with the CURE Violence and P.I.E.R. Models, engages community members and stakeholders in activities to improve knowledge of and ability to apply violence intervention strategies
VICTOR will work in partnership with community members and partner organizations who will address violence by using street outreach for information dissemination, community strategic meetings, mediation techniques and sharing information that supports conflict resolution. Direct intervention tactics will be centered in community while remaining focused on healing and education.
The program was started to fill a need in a community desperate to alter the trend of violence. The city of Newport News has seen an influx in violent crime over the last few years, especially in the area of gun violence. The current solutions have had a stagnant and sometimes negative effect on the problem. The idea, born from the founder of one of the partner organizations, LaTonya "Abys" Denson, takes a restorative, public health, and community-rooted approach to violence by utilizing a three tier (prevention, intervention, and healing) methodology to decrease the levels of violence in the city.
This too shall pass: Just like with weather, we will have gloomy days, we will have storms, but after every storm, the sun will shine again.
Violence is not something that can be eliminated in a matter of months or years, but through the VICTOR program participants will see an increase in the safe and calm, “sunny days” that make their community a pleasure to live in.
We are currently seeking credible messengers who will serve as Violence Intervention Prevention Specialists in the The Grove (Beechmont Dr area; 23608) and Marshall Courts (23607) neighborhoods of Newport News.
To achieve the outcomes for the future, the VICTOR team will implement the following actions
The VICTOR Program will develop and deploy a community-led crisis response protocol that will be implemented to connect wrap-around services to high risk individuals in need.
The VICTOR Program will train credible messengers known as violence intervention prevention specialists who are licensed to operate in the communities they're serving to de-escalate and mediate violent encounters while capturing case notes to assist with resource referrals and client progress tracking.
The VICTOR Program will train street outreach workers to disseminate information, organize, educate, and mobilize the target population and its community; serve as liaison between the community, the city, and program staff.
