The VICTOR program is a program aimed to reduce community violence in the City of Newport News through the creation of a coordinated Crisis Response network. This will be accomplished through strategic collaboration on new, innovative projects that are community-centered, healing-centered, and education-focused, and utilize direct intervention tactics.
The program was started to fill a need in a community desperate to alter the trend of violence. The city of Newport News has seen an influx in violent crime over the last few years, especially in the area of gun violence. The current solutions have had a stagnant and sometimes negative effect on the problem. The idea, born from the founder of one of the partner organizations, LaTonya "Abys" Denson, takes a restorative, public health, and community-based approach to violence by utilizing a three tier (prevention, intervention, and healing) methodology to decrease the levels of violence in the city.
This too shall pass: Just like with weather, we will have gloomy days, we will have storms, but after every storm, the sun will shine again.
Violence is not something that can be eliminated in a matter of months or years, but through the VICTOR program participants will see an increase in the safer, calmer, “sunny days” that make their community a pleasure to live in.
To achieve the outcomes for the future, the VICTOR team will implement the following actions
The VICTOR Program will develop and deploy a community-led crisis response protocol that will be implemented to deliver wrap-around services to community members in need.
The VICTOR Program will train credible messengers and violence interrupters who are licensed to operate in the communities they're serving to de-escalate and mediate violent encounters while capturing case notes to assist with resource referrals and client progress tracking,
The VICTOR Program will train street outreach teams to disseminate information, organize, educate, and mobilize the target population and its community; serve as liaison between the community, the city, and program staff.
