Credible Messenger: Violence Intervention Prevention Specialist

Make a Real Difference in the Marshall Courts (23607) or The Grove (Beechmont Dr area) (23608) neighborhoods of Newport News, Virginia.

Do you have lived experience that gives you unique insight into the challenges faced by those in the Marshall Courts or The Grove (Beechmont Dr area) neighborhoods? 


About the Role:

As a Community Violence Intervention Prevention Specialist, you will be at the forefront of our community-based violence intervention prevention efforts. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

  • Engaging with community members to build trust and establish strong relationships.
  • Identifying and intervening in potential conflict situations, employing effective mediation and de-escalation techniques.
  • Collaborating with local organizations and stakeholders to promote peace and stability.
  • Providing mentorship and support to individuals most likely to perpetrate or be a victim of violence, guiding them towards positive life choices.
  • Participating in and leading community workshops and events focused on violence prevention.


What We’re Looking For:

  • Reliable transportation.
  • Residency in Marshall Courts or the The Grove (Beechmont Dr area) neighborhood is preferred – we believe in the power of community members to drive change in their own neighborhoods. 
  • Personal lived experience that provides an understanding of the challenges and dynamics of the Marshall Courts and The Grove (Beechmont Dr area) neighborhoods.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with an ability to relate to a diverse range of individuals.
  • A natural ability for conflict resolution and a calm, empathetic approach to sensitive situations.
  • A commitment to nonviolence and a strong belief in the power of positive change.
  • Candidates who are eager to learn and work in an environment that can be fast paced or time sensitive.
